Frank W. GerardFrank W. Gerard, 89, of Duluth, Minn., died peacefully on Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Cloquet, Minn., with his loving family by his side. He was born July 16, 1924, to Frank A. and Margaret (Maher) Gerard in Duluth. Upon his 1943 graduation from Sacred Heart Cathedral High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marines. Frank completed training as a radio operator, and was commissioned as an Ensign. He served aboard the Liberty ship Joe C.S. Blackburn, serving in the Pacific for the duration of World War II. His ship survived a Kamikaze attack and a typhoon that sent larger ships to the bottom. He married Norma Anderson on Oct. 30, 1948, in Duluth. Frank worked as a manager in lumber and hardware sales for 46 years. He served as Justice of the Peace of Brevator Township. Frank was a very committed blood donor for over 60 years. He was a passionate golfer, scoring a hole-in-one on two occasions. He loved to travel and visited many countries in addition to his own. He joined Pastors for Peace and traveled with a convoy to deliver supplies into Mexico and Central America. Frank was a devout catholic and spent his last 25 years as a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church.
