Alice M. Penttila was born June 19, 1926, in Superior, Wis., to Edward and Fern (Lull) Lindberg. She passed away on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013 in Yuma, Ariz. Alice graduated from Carlton High School in 1944 and was united in marriage to Richard Gerlach on July 31, 1945. They lived and raised their four children in Carlton, Minn., until his death on Jan. 31, 1977. Alice was employed as the secretary to the principal of Carlton Elementary School from January 1962 until April 1979. She then married Oiva Penttila on April 21, 1979, and they moved to New Brighton, Minn., until his retirement in May 1982. They traveled in the winters and spent their summers at their lake home in Canada, until 1999 when they settled in Yuma. Alice loved cooking, the holidays, fishing, flying, and received her pilot's license at the age of 54.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Richard; daughter, Gwen VanGuilder; and four brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by her husband, Oiva Penttila; daughters, Linda (James) Warren and Sheila (David) Hopp; son, Bruce (Debora) Gerlach; son-in-law, Tom VanGuilder; sister, Lois Olson; step-son, Richard (Barb) Penttila; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2014 at Hillside Cemetery in Carlton.
