Virginia Olsen passed away on the afternoon of Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013. She was born on April 25, 1935, in Ashland, Wis., to William and Margaret Knoblauch. The Knoblauch family lived outside of Ashland and later moved to the edge of rural Lake Superior. Virginia graduated with honors from DePadua High School. Virginia married Jack Olsen in 1958 and the family moved to Cloquet, Minn., in 1970.
Virginia liked to read, work word puzzles, take family vacations around Lake Superior, swim, go rock hunting for agates and thomsonite, and take hikes in the woods. She, her sisters and her children would look for hazelnuts, wintergreen, wild asparagus, blueberries and other flora that could be eaten or turned into wreaths or decorations. She enjoyed planning and throwing birthday parties for her children.
Virginia enjoyed the arts, subscribed to book reviews and took the family to museums. For a few years before she started a family, she worked as an elementary school teacher. She liked to cook and enjoyed trying new foods.
Virginia had a wicked sense of humor that she shared with most everyone.
Virginia is survived by her three sons, Scott, Gregg (Kim) and Bradd Olsen; six grandchildren, Nick, Josh, Trina, Alanna, Matthew and Katie; her brother, Bill (Andrea) Knoblauch; and two sisters, Judy (Richard) Dahl and Clare Palmer.
The family would like to thank all the service and healthcare professionals who have worked with and cared for Virginia in the past years. Thank you very much.
A celebration of life to remember Virginia will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Monday, Oct. 7, at Plainview Estates, 2507 Fairview Ave., Cloquet. A memorial service will also be held in Ashland in the summer of 2014.
