Martha Mary JuntunenMartha Mary Juntunen, 96, passed away on Tuesday, Sept 24, 2013. She lived a happy, full life and will be missed by many. Martha was born in Cloquet, Minn., and graduated from Cloquet High School with honors.
Martha Mary Juntunen, 96, passed away on Tuesday, Sept 24, 2013. She lived a happy, full life and will be missed by many. Martha was born in Cloquet, Minn., and graduated from Cloquet High School with honors. She worked for Diamond Brands match company, Roman's Style Shop, Towsle's coffee and meals, Mrs. McNair in her home, and as a bookkeeper for her father's trucking and logging company. In 1938, she married Oscar Juntunen who later became the Carlton County Sheriff. Martha was a deputy sheriff and cooked three meals a day, 365 days a year for the prisoners for 16 years.
Martha was an artist. Her work is displayed in most countries of the world. In addition, Martha was district president for the Minnesota Parents and Teachers Association and was involved in many other community organizations.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ida (Saari) Wahtera; father, Eino Wahtera; son, Frede; and husband, Oscar Juntunen.
Martha had three children, Frede (deceased), Stephen (Lynette Rauscher) Juntunen and Mary Juntunen; three grandchildren, Tess (Derrick) Chase, Molly (Cory) Weinrich and Paul (Stacie) Hohn; and six great-grandchildren, Samantha, Derek, Finn, Florence, Lola and Lyra.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at the Cloquet Presbyterian Church, 47 Fourth St., Cloquet, with coffee to follow.
