A Cloquet woman and numerous juveniles are facing charges following what Assistant County Attorney Michael Boese termed “a melee” that involved a number of weapons.
Taylor Marie Drift-Martin, 18, was charged in Carlton County Court on Wednesday with one felony count of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and one count of second-degree aiding and abetting an assault.
According to the statement of probable cause filed in the incident, on Aug. 29 at approximately 11:14 p.m., officers from the Cloquet and Fond du Lac police departments were dispatched to investigate an assault that reportedly happened in the 100 block of Brevator Road west of Cloquet. Fond du Lac officers went to a home in the 200 block of Scotty Drive to meet with a person who had reportedly been hit with a hammer.
Officers spoke with the alleged victim, a juvenile, and saw that he had been hit in the abdominal area and on his back by a blunt object.
Further investigation by officers revealed the juvenile had been at the Brevator Road residence with a friend of his. Allegedly, the victim had an unsettled disagreement with another juvenile, who was hanging out at another address with several friends that evening, including Drift-Martin.
Through further investigation, officers learned it had been arranged that the group would go over to the Brevator Road residence so the two with the unsettled disagreement could fight each other.
However, when the one juvenile and his three companions arrived at the residence, the other juvenile exited the house carrying two kitchen knives. That juvenile held onto the knives and kept them at a downward angle but charged at several of the members of the other juvenile’s group in an allegedly threatening fashion. This caused one of the other juveniles to grab a hammer that he had brought with him and begin swinging the hammer at the other, making contact and striking that juvenile on at least two occasions.
Drift-Martin also purportedly had a small BB gun or airsoft gun in the form of a miniature black pistol. At some point during the altercation, she reportedly brandished the small weapon and pointed it at one of the juveniles.
All of the juveniles involved in the incident are facing charges similar to Drift-Martin.
