Congratulations to our 2013 Carlton County Outstanding Senior Citizens! Barb Ramey of Moose Lake, who is an RSVP volunteer with Volunteer Services, and James Dennie of Wrenshall, who is an U.S. Air National Guard veteran, received their awards at the Carlton County Fair in Barnum on Aug. 16. Runner-ups for the awards were Loren Bergstedt of Esko, Roger Harp of Cromwell, Jan Koski of Carlton, and Harry and Joyce Solheim of Barnum. It is with great gratitude that we thank the above volunteers and all volunteers of Carlton County for the time they commit to making our community a better place to live and for putting a light into someone’s life.
Volunteer opportunities through RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program):
Adult Literacy — Need volunteers who have strong math or reading skills. Volunteer days are Monday mornings and/or Wednesday afternoons.
Caregiver Program — Need volunteers to become leaders in the Powerful Tools for Caregivers program. Leaders will facilitate groups of caregivers, with the objective to help the caregivers thrive, rather than simply survive, as care is provided to a loved one. The next training will be held in Duluth on Oct. 1-2.
Cloquet School District — The Power Lunch Reading Program is seeking individuals to come in during the student’s lunch/recess time, eat lunch with their student in the library/media center, and spend time sharing the fun and joy of reading. Volunteer time is limited to one hour a day, one day a week, October to March. Volunteers receive a complimentary lunch.
Food Shelf Clerk — Salvation Army is looking for clerks every Tuesday, 8:30-11:30 a.m. and/or 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Friendly Visiting at Assisted Livings — Days are flexible, Monday through Sunday, 10-11:30 a.m. or 3-4 p.m. in Cloquet. Time commitment can be 30 minutes to one hour. Activities can be reading, going for walks, calling Bingo, playing cards or other games.
Meals on Wheels Drivers — Openings are available for every day, once a week, once a month, or on call, Monday to Friday, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Deliver meals to homebound seniors in the Carlton County area.
