The community of Carlton marks the high point of summer with its annual Carlton Daze this weekend — and no matter what the temperature, the action is sure to be hot.
The weekend kicks off with the community garage sales from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, July 26. Maps are available at local businesses. Also on Friday will be a library book and bake sale at the Carlton Fire Hall from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., a spaghetti feed at Four Seasons Sports Complex from 4-8 p.m. and bingo at the Carlton VFW from 4-9 p.m.
The VFW will host a flag ceremony at 4:45 p.m., and kids’ fun races will take place at Four Seasons beginning at 5 p.m. (sign-up will take place from 3:45-4:45 p.m.). The 21st Annual 5K Run/Walk will get underway at 6 p.m. at Four Seasons, with registration from 3-5:45 p.m., and the softball tournament begins at 6:30 p.m. and lasts throughout the weekend.
Live music will be featured at the Third Base Bar from 9 p.m. to close, featuring “The Jacks,” and at the Carlton VFW from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., featuring “Fatt Chance.”
A pancake breakfast will start the day on Saturday from 6:30-11 a.m. at Four Seasons, sponsored by the Robert C. Rodd Memorial Scholarship Fund. Check-in for the Minnesota Voyageur Trail Ultra 50-Mile Foot Race starts at 5 a.m., followed by the race start. Participants can pick up their race packets on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at Four Seasons, and the award ceremony will take place at Carlton High School at 8 p.m.
The volleyball tournament takes to the courts at 8 a.m., and the Handmade/Homegrown Market will be held in the Four Seasons parking lot from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Anyone wanting to take in the period styles of the historic Scott House is invited to visit between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday or from 2-4 p.m. Sunday and enjoy free refreshments and an art show.
Pine Hill Golf Course on Highway 61 will host the Carlton Daze Golf Tournament beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. Classic car aficionados will enjoy the car show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with awards presented at 1 p.m. in front of the Carlton VFW.
The opening gavel will fall at 11 a.m. on the Carlton Area Lions Auction at the Carlton VFW, which will also be the site of ongoing bingo play from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. as well as a Texas Hold ’em Tournament at noon, a horseshow tournament at noon and a steak fry from 4-8 p.m.
Bring the whole family to the popular Duck Races at Otter Creek at 2 p.m., sponsored by the Carlton High School volleyball team, followed by a Bean Bag Tournament at 4 p.m.
Third Base Bar will feature the live music of “Tempted Fate” from 9 p.m. to close on Saturday, and the VFW will welcome back “Fatt Chance” from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
A Disc Golf Tournament is planned for Sunday, July 28, at South Terrace Disc Park, beginning at 10 a.m. There will once again be bingo play at the VFW from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The big Carlton Daze parade will hit the streets of downtown Carlton at 1 p.m., with lineup beginning at noon by Carlton High School, organized by Wells Fargo Bank of Carlton.
Following the parade, the Carlton Fire Department will host an open house, including demonstrations, kids’ activities and refreshments. The Zoomobile will be at Four Seasons, sponsored by Carlton Daze golfers, along with kids activities and a performance of the Teddy Bear Band — bring your own bear to the performance and sign up to win a family pack of tickets to the Water Park of America.
The Pedal to the Medal Tractor Pull will also take place following the parade at Four Seasons, sponsored by Carlton Community Education. The Carlton Chamber of Commerce will hold raffle drawings at 4 p.m. at Four Seasons.
Closing out the weekend will be live music at the Third Base Bar, featuring “Diet Folk” from 2-5 p.m. outside, “Andy and John” from 5-8 p.m. outside, and “Milk Bone” from 8 p.m. to midnight inside.
Features that will run all weekend long include the B&B Wagon, Coney Island Coneys and a dunk tank at Third Base Bar; carnival games, food vendors and crafters in the parking lot at Four Seasons; the annual U-10 Carlton Baseball/Softball Association Tournament at the Chub Lake ball fields; “walking tacos” and Ray’s food and root beer floats at the Carlton VFW; food and beverages at The Streetcar; and sales of Carlton historical T-shirts at Wells Fargo and Carlton Bike Rental/Art Dimensions.
A special note to festival goers — there will be no parking in front of the VFW on Saturday beginning at 7 a.m. to allow for exhibit displays.
