Brian Saaristo of Barnum, formerly of Wright, is one of 10 individuals named Heroes in the Northern Minnesota Red Cross Region and is the recipient of the 2013 American Red Cross Heroes Award. He will receive the military award at the fifth annual American Red Cross Heroes Breakfast on June 6 in Minneapolis. Brian, a U.S. Army sergeant, lost both of his feet in an attack while he was serving in Iraq on July 2, 2006, and went on to encourage other wounded veterans. Congratulations to Brian for giving back to other veterans and for this well- deserved award.
Matthew Thom of Poplar, Wis., son of Tim and Bonnie Thom and grandson of Wayne and Liz Thom, was awarded the Eagle Scout rank. Matthew’s Eagle Scout project involved improving the North Country Trail by clearing brush and installing signposts for signs and literature boxes along the trail. Matthew has been in scouting since age 6. Congratulations to this dedicated Scout.
The Women of Bethlehem Lutheran in Wright will hold their Annual Mother-Daughter Tea and Luncheon on Saturday, May 11, at 1:30 p.m.
The AARP Refresher Safe Driver Course will take place at the Cromwell Pavilion on June 3 from 1-5 p.m. Call Kenny at 644-3442 or Lindsay at 644-3739 to register. There are a limited number of participants, so please sign up soon.
The Farmer’s Co-op Store Board in Wright will meet on Wednesday, May 15, at 10 a.m. for their regular meeting. This is one hour earlier due to a conflict by one of the board members.
Don’t forget to vote for our District 8 Lake Country Power director by mail. Danny Smith and Jim Huhta are running for director. The ballots must be returned by May 21 to be accepted and counted. Ballots may be cast in person at the annual meeting on May 22. Ballots were mailed out last week so you should have yours by now. The LCP Annual Meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 22, in Timber Hall in Embarrass, Minn., starting at 5 p.m. with a dinner and 6:15 p.m. meeting.
