Donald F. Johnson, 93, of Carlton, Minn., passed away Friday, April 26, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born Sept. 26, 1919, in Cloquet to Gust and Anna Johnson. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps on the Gunflint Trail and then for Wood Conversion/Conwed in Cloquet from 1941-1976. Don also worked for Bergquist Imports from 1976-1978, and as a custodian for the Carlton County Courthouse from 1978-1984. He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Carlton since 1939, and the Conwed 25 Year Club. Don enjoyed fishing, camping, playing cards and freecell, senior dances, playing his harmonica at family jam sessions, and classic country and polka music. He especially loved spending time with his family and his senior dance friends, church family, living at his home on the hill, and his Farmall tractors, and fixing anything.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 56 years, Doris; and siblings, Melvin, Vernon, Clifford, Gerald, Roger, Leslie, Wilfred, Stanley, Margaret McKibbon, and Ardelle Hunter Anderson.
He is survived by his children, Larry (Nancy) Johnson, Ron (Lois) Johnson, Debby Johnson, Pat (Marvin) Durkee and Cindy (Gary) Nelson; grandchildren, Lisa, Lora, Nicky, Anita, Derek, Natalie, Amy, Tricia, Susan and Pamela; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two anxiously expected great-grandchildren; special friends, Bonnie Walker, Don Musolf and Joan Crossmon; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Carlton. The visitation will resume Wednesday, May 8, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service, also at Bethesda Lutheran Church, followed by a luncheon and time of fellowship in the social hall.
