Shockers secure floor hockey title

Although a biology teacher at Cloquet High School, perhaps Dustin Randall’s best test is shown with his toughness in the gym.
Randall, 33, is the oldest player in the Cloquet floor hockey intramural league. Last week, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound instructor, girls soccer coach — and free-throw-line-extended defenseman — led his Shockers to an unbeaten season and club championship.
Randall said he scored a couple of times in the Shockers’ final 10-4 victory over the rival Riders, and estimated that teammate Steve Polkowski, a social studies teacher and goaltender, had a dozen saves.
“Dustin can run with anybody and Steve is the top goalie in the league,” said Tom Lenarz, Cloquet athletic director and floor hockey league founder of the middle-aged athletes. “It’s really cool they take the time away from their families to come to the gym and connect with kids.”
Lenarz, who organizes, schedules and referees all of the games from just after Christmas break until early March, said he’d never play like his colleagues, but added the usual league, which began in 2004, has been successful with its laid-back rules and plenty of fun.
With his knees admittedly sore after several seasons, Randall agreed.
“You give those kids a stick and I think they like to take out a little aggression on me, as their teacher,” said Randall, who along with Polkowski, joined six seniors en route to last week’s title. “You come home sore some nights, but it’s fun to get out there.”
