CEC boys are on top of the Lake Superior ConferenceBy: Jeff Papas, Pine Journal
The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys team (12-5-2) saw its nine-game unbeaten streak end with a 3-2 home loss to Eden Prairie on Monday night at Northwoods Credit Union Arena.
The game, which was a makeup of a previously scheduled contest postponed by weather, saw Karson Kuhlman and Westin Michaud score for CEC and Zack Strom make 25 saves in goal. It was the team’s first loss of calendar year 2013 and their first setback since a Dec. 18 loss at Hopkins.
The next night, though, the ’Jacks rallied for three third-period goals to beat a fleet young Superior team 4-2 at Wessman Arena.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the first period on Daniel Mikel’s third short-handed goal of the season with assists from Dane Sislo and Kyler Krob.
The Lumberjacks tied it up at 7:06 of the second period on Tanner Robideaux’s goal with assists from Westin Michaud and Ryan Lind.
The Spartans regained a 2-1 lead later in the second period when Beau Reder’s rebound attempt, after a shot by Aaron Miller, went off the post and then the skate of CEC goaltender Justin Ketola before crossing the goal line.
CEC tied the game at 2-2 when Karson Kuhlman scored with a helper from Michaud with more than 12 minutes remaining in the third period.
The Lumberjacks put the game away with goals 20 seconds apart late in the third period: Nate Niemi scored at 12:09, with an assist from Koby Bender, and Drew Dincau scored at 12:29, with help from Robideaux and Michaud.
Ketola made 16 saves for the Lumberjacks. Superior’s Zach Reiswig stopped 29 shots.
CEC, which leads the Lake Superior Conference, plays at Hermantown tonight and at home against Duluth East next Tuesday night.
