UPdated: Icy roads cause cancellations, poor driving conditions

In addition to cancelling schools around the region (see list at bottom of this story), Cloquet has also cancelled three events this evening: the high school wrestling meet scheduled against Aitkin as well as a girls varsity basketball game against Proctor. The boys hockey game against Eden Prairie set for tonight in Cloquet is also cancelled.

As well, the Esko basketball game vs. Floodwood has been postponed due to weather. New game time and date is Tuesday February 5, 2013 at Floodwood at 7:15 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued a freezing rain advisory for Northeast Minnesota. Although many of the main roads are fine for driving, many secondary roads are extremely icy this morning.

Here is the National Weather Service freezing rain advisory issued at 9:58 a.m. today:

.FREEZING RAIN WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE ACROSS THE ARROWHEAD OF

MINNESOTA. DRIZZLE...SOME FREEZING ON CONTACT WITH COLD

SURFACES...WILL LINGER ACROSS THE REMAINDER OF NORTHEAST MINNESOTA.

THE MOST EXTENSIVE ICING OVERNIGHT OCCURED FROM CASS COUNTY

NORTHWARD INTO KOOCHICHING COUNTY. ADDITIONAL ICE ACCUMULATIONS

WILL BE GREATEST OVER THE ARROWHEAD OF MINNESOTA.

CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO IMPROVE IN THE AFTERNOON AS

PRECIPITATION DECREASES AND AIR TEMPERATURES RISE A FEW DEGREES.

HOWEVER FOG MAY BECOME MORE WIDESPREAD AND LOCALLY DENSE AS MOIST

AIR LINGERS OVER SNOW COVERED GROUND. MUCH COLDER AIR WILL PUSH

INTO THE REGION OVERNIGHT WITH PRECIPITATION CHANGING TO SNOW. A

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY HAS BEEN POSTED FOR BIGFORK...

INTERNATIONAL FALLS AND ELY FOR A TOTAL OF 3 TO 7 INCHES OF SNOW
