Virgil Delbert Varnes, 87, of Superior, Wis., passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at Golden Living Center. He was born Nov. 8, 1925, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Peter and Esther (Johnson) Varnes.

Virgil Delbert Varnes, 87, of Superior, Wis., passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at Golden Living Center. He was born Nov. 8, 1925, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Peter and Esther (Johnson) Varnes. Virgil served his country in both the United States Army and the U.S. Marines Reserve. He worked as a crane operator for U.S. Steel in Duluth, Minn., and enjoyed Virgil was preceded in death by his parents and several siblings.

He is survived by his wife, Annamae; one daughter, Lucinda Young of Hope Mills, N.C.; one step-son, Steven VanGuilder of South Shore, S.D.; one step-daughter, Jodi (Royce McKinnon) Kujawa of Superior; two brothers, Ervin (Marilyn) Varnes of Burmingham, Ala., and Duane (Sandy) Pionk of Superior; four sisters, Lou Edin of Minneapolis, Kathy (Bill) Smith of Robbinsdale, Minn., Audrey (Vern) Rustad of Wrenshall, Minn., and Erma Ketchmark of Minneapolis; six grandchildren, Rachael, Brittani, Kasey, Jordan, Brody and Tahlor; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 21, from noon until the 1 p.m. memorial service at Nelson Funeral Care, 1004 Cloquet Ave., Cloquet. Military honors will be presented by the Nicholson-Sellgren VFW Post 2962 of Carlton, followed by refreshments in the fellowship room.
