Cloquet residence at the center of another police investigation

Cloquet Police are investigating a gunshot sound reported by several people last Wednesday night, Dec. 5.

According to a press release, Cloquet Police were called to a home on the 2300 block of Kelly Avenue in Cloquet at about 9:32 p.m., where several residents and neighbors reported hearing the sound of a gunshot.

On scene, police interviewed several people and learned of possible threats made to people at the residence via text messaging. No one was injured during the incident and no suspects have been identified.

Police are currently following up on information obtained through the investigation and the incident remains under investigation, Detective Derek Randall said Tuesday, adding that police are still trying to determine who sent the threatening text messages.

The Wednesday incident marks the second time in less than two months that police responded to that residence for potentially life-threatening crimes.

Police responded to the same address the morning of Oct. 14 when a caller reported an arson fire had been set at the residence while the occupants were at home. When police arrived, the residents told officers that two individuals had been at the home and started the fire on the back porch area before running away on foot through a neighboring yard.

One of the home’s occupants was then able to put out the fire with the help of a garden hose before it spread any further. The residents at the home gave police a physical description of the perpetrators, and an arson investigator from the Cloquet Area Fire District was brought in to assist.

At that time, suspect Cody Logan Fohrenkam, 20, of Cloquet was charged with first-degree arson and third-degree criminal damage to property – a third charge of obstructing the legal process was dismissed Dec. 4.

Police arrested Fohrenkam after an occupant of the home identified him and police linked him to a suspicious car that had been seen in the area at the same time as the two potential suspects. Fohrenkam is still in custody and has a settlement hearing rescheduled for Dec. 26 at Carlton County Sixth District Court.

The arson and gun shot calls are just the latest in a laundry list of calls for service to the same residence. So far in 2012, police have logged at least 14 calls to the same address, for reasons ranging from harassing phone calls and terroristic threats to welfare checks and dog complaints.

Cloquet Deputy Police Chief Terry Hill said last Thursday that police have no physical evidence of the alleged gunshots in the most recent incident, but several witnesses heard the shots.
