Talk about it

This month contains a very interesting date: Wednesday, 12-12-12. What an interesting date. I have an interest in unusual or neat numbers and this year I noticed that my husband turned 76 and I’m 67, so I call this our Magic Birthday Year! Do you know of anyone with a birthday on 12-12-12? And maybe they will be 12 years old. That sure would be a great birthday to have.

Congratulations to Bob and Faye Topliff of Duluth as they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception at Valentini’s with family and friends. Bob and the former Faye Mowers were married on Oct. 13, 1962, in the Cromwell Methodist Church. Their children are Dean and Diane Topliff, Maile Topliff, and Neal and Beth Topliff. They also have two grandchildren.

The Cromwell Post Office will have their customer appreciation day on Wednesday, Dec. 12. Coffee, juice and Christmas goodies will be served from 8 a.m. to noon. Everyone is welcome. Thanks in advance to Annie for doing this.

The Farmer’s Co-op Store in Wright will hold their Annual Customer Appreciation the week of Dec. 17- 22. Stop in, enjoy a cup of coffee and goodies and then sign up for prizes to be drawn on Dec. 22. There is also a kid’s coloring activity, too. Every kid who colors a picture will receive a candy bar. These will be displayed around the store until Christmas.

The third annual Christmas Brunch and Bake Sale will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. to noon. There will be many new and gently used items for sale, including craft items, silent auction, baked goods and, most of all, the brunch.

The Villa Vista/Cardinal Court will have their Annual Family Night on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 6 p.m. Area folks are welcome to come and help the residents celebrate the coming Christmas season.

Bethany Lutheran Church, Cromwell, invites the public to “A Smoky Mountain Christmas: Change of Heart” on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 2 p.m. This musical/play performance will be put on by members of the congregation and choir. There will be a light fellowship meal following the performance. Free-will donations are appreciated. We hope you will enjoy this presentation, which speaks about the true meaning of Christmas.

It’s luminary time! The Cromwell Luminary Service will be held Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Pavilion. Memorial luminary bags are now on sale for $1 each. Please contact Walter or Beth Collman, Jeanne Weimer, Deb Templeton or Lindsay Lally to purchase your luminary bags.

The Elementary Winter (Christmas) Program will be held Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. Both programs will be held in the large gym.

Join the Chmielewskis at the Cromwell Community Center for a gala New Year’s Eve party on Dec. 31, from noon to 4 p.m. You will be back home before dark. Dinner will be served at noon, with dancing from 1-4 p.m. There will be prizes galore! BYOB – champagne and noisemakers will be provided. Call for your reservations at 218-372-3616 or 218-879-6029 (They need to know for food preparation). Cost is $22.50 per person. The New Year’s Baby arrives at 3 p.m.

We have been reminded lately that we need to try to shop locally whenever possible. Have you thought about giving gift certificates from our local stores such as our bookstore, hardware store, Co-op store, gas stations, lumberyard, and/or restaurants? These can be used at their convenience and will benefit our local businesses.

Another idea is to have folks over for a meal, or take them out for a meal. It’s the time to share our good wishes in creative ways. And, don’t forget those in nursing homes, etc. Even a card will help cheer them at this time of year. A book of stamps would be a great gift idea, too. You can stop in the post office and see the new stamps for Christmas. They are really neat.
