Volunteers from the Barnum Fire Department and Carlon County Sheriff’s deputies made their first ice rescue of the season Thursday – for a dog.

Just after 4 p.m. Thursday, caller reported that her 3-year-old, 100-pound German shepherd/Golden Retriever mix dog broke through the ice on Little Hanging Horn Lake in Barnum. Volunteers from the Barnum Fire Department with the assistance of the Carlton County Sheriff's Office responded to the call.

Upon arrival, responders met with the dog’s owner who indicated that the dog had broken through the ice more than 150 feet from shore. A 12-foot boat was commandeered from the shore and rescue ropes were secured to the boat. A responder – wearing water and ice safety gear –rode in the watercraft that was tethered to shore and retrieved the dog. Once the dog was successfully brought into the boat, the boat was towed to the shore. The dog was turned over to its owner and appeared to be in good condition.

The Carlton County Sheriff's Office would like to take this opportunity to remind people that no amount of ice is safe and can be unpredictiblly thin. Please use caution and common sense before venturing onto any frozen waters. For ice conditions, check with your local sporting goods retailer as they may be able to provide general ice conditions for your area.
