DULUTH — Mahnomen quarterback Jacob Pavek passed for a touchdown and ran for two others in igniting the No. 1 Indians over Barnum 26-0 in a Class A state quarterfinal football contest Saturday afternoon at a soggy Public Schools Stadium in Duluth.
Pavek, a senior, totaled a game-leading 179 rushing yards on 27 carries, while throwing for 48 more during a wetter-than-normal game. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Pavek accounted for three of the top-ranked Indians’ four scores on the day, running for touchdowns of 1 and 21 yards, and finding Nathan Hanson on a 35-yard passing strike.
Unbeaten Mahnomen (12-0), last year’s Class A runners-up, led 14-0 at halftime and never trailed in recording their eighth shutout of the fall. The Indians now meet Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City in a semifinal Nov. 17 at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
Saturday’s soaked game featured 11 turnovers and countless mishandled snaps, as Mahnomen recorded four giveaways. The Bombers netted only 99 yards of offense and six first downs, while turning the ball over seven times. Barnum finished 9-3.
