Cloquet candidate forum set for tonight

Are you worried about classroom sizes? Perhaps you’re wondering what a city council candidate plans to do with the sales tax revenue if it passes. And what exactly do the state legislative candidates think about raising taxes?

All you have to do is ask.

The Cloquet local candidate forum ¬starts runs from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today (Tuesday, Oct. 23) in the Council Chambers at City Hall. Candidates for the State Senate and House of Representatives will appear from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., followed by candidates for Cloquet City Council and the Carlton County Board of Commissioners (representing Cloquet) from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Candidates for Cloquet School Board will take the stage from 6:30 to 7 p.m.

Candidates invited to the three-part forum include Cloquet City Council candidates – Roy Maki and Lara Wilkinson for the At-Large post, Steve Langley and interim Councilor Mark Roberts for Ward 5 – along with District 1 Carlton County Commissioner candidates Dick Brenner (incumbent) and former Cloquet City Councilor Erik Blesener. Also invited are Senate District 11 candidates Tony Lourey (DFL, incumbent) and Bill Saumer (Republican) as well as House District 11A candidates Jim Putnam (Republican), Cory Pylkka (Independence) and Mike Sundin (DFL) Cloquet School Board candidates Duane Buytaert, Jim Crowley, Gary “Hawk” Huard, Brett Wienen are also invited.

Barry Bergquist and Pete Radosevich will moderate the Oct. 23 candidate forum , which is sponsored by the Legislative Affairs committee of the Cloquet Area Chamber of Commerce.

Prospective voters are encouraged to attend the forum in person and submit their own questions. As well, the forum will air live on WKLK AM 1230. If you miss the forum, you can catch it on CAT-7 starting at 7:30 p.m. tonight with numerous repeats until Election Day. The Pine Journal will also report on the candidate responses in this week’s paper.
