Wright - Cromwell News

By: Jennie K. Hanson, Pine Journal

The Cromwell/Wright area has been the site of several untimely deaths in the past month. First the fatal train accident on East Mud Lake Road, then just this past week the two deaths on the corner of Award Boulevard and now a tragic electrocution of a 30-year-old man at the site of the bridge replacement on Center Road. Let’s hope and pray that these types of tragedies end. We have had enough! Our sympathy to all concerned. It is so hard to lose a loved one at any age, but when they are so young, it is doubly hard.

Last week I wrote about kindergarten in school, and Judy Tamminen gave me an update on what she remembered about it: “The year-round kindergarten in Wright (1972) – yes it was year-round but didn’t begin until the fall and it started with two days a week (Tuesday/Thursday), then beginning at the first of the year 1973, the class went Monday-Wednesday-Friday.”

Attention veterans! Join the folks up at Cardinal Court-Villa Vista on Nov. 8. Share your stories and time. A luncheon for the veterans will be served.

Also, some of the residents are looking for volunteers to join them at some of their favorite card games. Can you help out? Give it a try on Thursday, Oct. 18, at 1:30 p.m. Just show up and then figure out what to do.

Dianne Knoben, executive director of the Tri-Community Food Shelf, wants everyone to know that the fresh produce brought to the Food Shelf to share with clients was greatly appreciated by all who received it.

Several area women attended the Annual Harvest Luncheon at Grace Lutheran in McGregor on Oct. 2. A wonderful lunch was served and the program on Lutheran Women sure was neat. Thanks ladies of Grace for this special day.

The Kettle River Conference Fall Gathering was held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright on Oct. 4 with 45-50 women in attendance. The gathering was well attended and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and the program provided. It started off with worship and communion service led by Pastor Brandi Hacker of Bethlehem. The morning business meeting was held and the only elections were for nominating committee. North East Minnesota Synod President Myrna Wells-Ulland presented a Powerpoint presentation on visioning for the future of the organization and how local units can increase participation and attendance. A delicious lunch was served at noon followed by a Bible study by Kathy Johnson in the afternoon. The installation of officers was held, results of the silent auction read and concluded with door prizes.

The Cromwell-Wright School’s ninth-grade civics class invites the community members of Cromwell and Wright to a “Meet the Candidates” forum on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Cromwell-Wright School Auditorium.

The Cardinal Quilters Guild will host their annual fall retreat Oct. 19-20 at the Cromwell Pavilion. They will spend up to two full days of quilting (their own projects or some new ones) and learn new tips and techniques of beautiful yet easy creative designs. Quilters of all levels of experience are welcome to attend either or both days. For more information contact Carolyn at 218-310-8357. Space is limited to the first 25 registrations.

The Cromwell-Wright speech team will again sponsor the Hunter’s Supper on Friday, Nov. 2. Volunteers are needed to help. Please contact Brian Schilling at the school if you are able to help out. Thank you!

It’s time again to start planning for the Chill-O-Ween Party! It will be held Friday, Oct. 26. We want everyone to “Save the Date!” It’s for all ages and will again be a potluck. If you have any questions or would like to make a donation, please call Alicia Jatkola at 218-838-8430.

There will be a Flu Shot Clinic from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct.17, at the Cromwell Medical Clinic. No appointment is needed. Cost is $25 for cash pay.

I noticed in the paper that Fabian Heckman, 79, of Hermantown died on Sept. 28. He was a history teacher in Cromwell when I was in the 11th or 12th grade (1961-63). His death brings back some neat memories of school days.

Volunteers are needed to help with vision and hearing screenings on Nov. 1 starting at 9 a.m. Please contact Megan Shelton, school nurse, at 218-644-3716 ext. 3150 or e-mail mshelton@cromwellwright.k12.mn.us.

That’s all the news from Lake Can’tbetoocareful and hello to all our bow hunters in the area. Stay safe!
