Predatory offender to move into Moose Lake Township

The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office has been notified that a Level 3 registered predatory offender will be moving into Moose Lake Township on Oct. 5. Dustin Kenneth Lee Nelson, 29, has indicated he will live on South Riverside Road.

A community notification meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 6 p.m. at the Moose Lake City Hall, 313 Elm Ave., Moose Lake, to notify residents of Nelson’s rights and responsibilities and answer any questions residents may have.

Nelson is described as being 5 feet, 11 inches tall, 183 pounds, of medium build, with blonde hair and blue eyes. According to the Minnesota Department of Corrections, Nelson was convicted of criminal sexual conduct after engaging in sexual contact with an adult female victim and holding her against her will. Contact included restraining the victim, pulling her to the ground and telling her he wanted to “have sex with her.” Nelson reportedly gained access to the victim by approaching her in a public park. The offender and his victim had no previous acquaintance.

Nelson is not currently wanted by police and has served the sentence imposed on him by the court. He was released from incarceration on Nov. 5, 2009, and resided on White Poplar Road near Sturgeon Lake up until the time he moved to Barnum Township in August 2010. At that time he made headlines after announcing that he would be homeless and living off the bike trail between Gamper’s and the city of Moose Lake. A public notification meeting at that time drew a large crowd of people, many of whom were upset that he would be living in proximity to the bike trail and fearing for their safety and the safety of their children. Minnesota Statute provides, however, that an offender can be classified as homeless, but is required to physically report to the law enforcement jurisdiction once per week.

Nelson is still required to comply with all requirements set forth in the Predatory Offender Registration law and will continue to be monitored by the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office.

For anyone wishing to obtain more information about Nelson, or who may have not attended the community notification meeting held in August 2010, there will be a representative from the Minnesota State Department of Corrections on hand at the community notification meeting to do a brief presentation on registered predatory offenders and community notification and answer questions.
