Letter: Is Cloquet only half patriotic?

To the Editor:

I would like to compliment Carlton on how patriotic their downtown area looks with all the American flags they have on display.

On the other hand, Cloquet only puts American flags on half of the light poles along Cloquet Avenue, despite all the money that Cloquet Avenue property owners had to pay in assessment fees for curb, gutter and said light poles when Cloquet Avenue was remodeled a number of years ago.

I have been asking about this for two years now and finally got an answer [on Aug. 21] from Brian Fritsinger via the major...the city cannot afford the cost to load all the flag holders, so that makes me think that Cloquet is only half patriotic.

In a recent Pine Journal article, the city wants to raise more taxes (as if they haven’t enough in recent years) in the form of an increase of our sales taxes for more parks.

Would someone please tell me if the city can’t afford to buy some American flags to beautify our downtown, how they can afford $4.5 million they say they need for parks and trails?

Mickey Hunter, Cloquet
