Veterans affected by flood may be eligible for money

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs has approved an application process that may help veterans and their families who have been affected by flood waters due to the extensive rainfalls that happened in Carlton County.

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs has approved an application process that may help veterans and their families who have been affected by flood waters due to the extensive rainfalls that happened in Carlton County.

All veterans who apply can be eligible for up to $750 reimbursement to help defray the cost of cleanup due to flood damage. Contact the Carlton County Veterans Service Office at 218-499-6838 to obtain an application. Applications and copies of receipts must be dated between the disaster timeframe as designated by Governor Dayton and/or FEMA, which is June 13 through Sept. 30, 2012.

Items that may qualify are appliances/furnace, building materials (flood/high wind related), cleaning supplies, clothing, flooring (carpet, hardwood, tile), food, plumbing supplies, rental costs for generators, water pumps, sump pumps, Bob Cats, backhoes, chain saw, etc., sand/sandbags, shelter costs if displaced by the flood, and sheetrock. Only one application per veteran is allowed.
