On Aug. 23, dental care will be provided at Carlton County Public Health Services starting at 8:30 a.m. by Children’s Dental Services (CDS). CDS improves the oral health of low-income children up to age 21 and pregnant women of all ages by providing a full range of services including exams, X-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, fillings, crowns and extractions – right within the health department.

“Carlton County provides a wide variety of services to children and families from home visiting to WIC,” stated Terri Allen, supervisor of Public Health for Carlton County. “Co-locating dental services along with WIC or other financial assistance programs decreases transportation barriers to care. Having CDS come to us to provide these services means that many children with extreme unmet oral health needs will receive life-saving dental treatment.”

“Preventive and restorative measures, including education, sealants fluoride treatments, fillings, crowns and extractions have a long-term impact on a child’s future dental health and well-being,” explained Sarah Wovcha, executive director, Children’s Dental Services, and co-chair of Smiles Across Minnesota. “Community based programs are cost-effective. Children receiving dental sealants in school-based programs have 60 percent less decay for up to five years. We are excited to start serving children in Carlton County.”

Children’s Dental Services will provide care for children on public assistance. Uninsured students who are income-eligible will receive free care through the program, paid for by charitable corporate and foundation contributions. If a family already has commercial insurance, those children and their parents will be encouraged to visit their dentist. All children receiving care will need parental consent.

Families in need of dental services are encouraged to call 218-879-4511 or 612-238-0216 for assistance in scheduling an appointment.
