VFW season ends one game short of state

The season ended one game short of the state tournament for the Cloquet VFW baseball team.

The team lost 6-4 to Ely in the championship final Wednesday, Aug.1, at Hermantown, after defeating the same team to start the tournament.

Cloquet reached the last eight in the event and then knocked Ely into the loser’s bracket with a 3-1 win on Monday at Hermantown.

District champion Ordean, Grand Rapids and Eveleth were eliminated from the event in that round, with Cloquet advancing to the winner’s bracket final.

On Tuesday, Ely defeated Hermantown 7-5 to eliminate them from the event, and then defeated Cloquet by the same score to set up a third and deciding game.

Ely then defeated Cloquet 6-4 in the final game to advance to the state tournament, denying Cloquet a first-ever opportunity to play in the event in the final game.
