Burkholder 5K opens pre-registration

Some 240 runners and walkers are expected to participate in the Esko Educational Foundation’s 16th Annual Kristin Burkholder 5K on Saturday, Aug. 11.

Race chair Janet Borash said pre-registration deadline is Saturday, Aug. 4, but registration may also be made immediately prior to the 8:45 a.m. kids’ race or 9 a.m. main event at Les Knuti Memorial Field on Canosia Road, Esko. The registration booth opens at 7:45 a.m. on race day.

Medals are awarded to male and female winners in eight age brackets and all entrants receive commemorative T-shirts. Entry fee is $15 per person or $50 per family.

A Spaghetti Feed and registration opportunity runs from 4- 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at Northwood United Methodist Church, 62 W. Highway 61, Esko.

Borash said all race proceeds go to the Kristin Burkholder Memorial Scholarship Fund and other Esko Educational Foundation scholarships. Kristin Burkholder was 12 and training for track and field when she died in 1997 from injuries in a pedestrian-car accident on Canosia Road.

Last year’s over-all winner was Jackson Lindquist, whose 5K time was 16:28, and the women’s over-all winner was Amanda Lepisto in 19:43.
