Cloquet’s VFW baseball team rode a hot streak into this week’s subdistrict and district playoffs and – despite having an 11-game winning streak snapped on Monday against Hermantown – advanced out of the South Subdistrict 8 event by taking third place in that event.

On Monday, the team lost 5-2 to Hermantown in the winners’ bracket of the event, snapping their win streak and dropping them into the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination event.

On Tuesday, the team rebounded by eliminating Esko from the tournament by a 10-0 score in five innings. Earlier that morning Esko had knocked out Proctor 6-3 to stay alive.

That win put Cloquet into the third-place game against Marshall, with both teams assured of advancing to the district tournament. Cloquet won that game 14-4 in five innings.

The Cloquet VFW team is 24-6 this spring and is made up of players who, according to Cloquet Legion coach Dennis Conklin, have played in state championship games at the 11-, 12-, 13- and 14-year-old levels.

Several of the players, including Brandon Conklin, Victor Foxx and and Gavin Takkunen, have done double duty with the Legion program this summer, which has been short of pitching arms.

Coach Bruce Kahara said that no Cloquet VFW team has ever qualified for the state tournament.

Ordean’s A-team won the subdistrict event, defeating Hermantown 13-6 in the title game.
