Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College announces the lineup of entertainment for the 2012 Hot Summer Nights Concert Series, a series of free concerts scheduled for the college’s outdoor-indoor amphitheater. The popular performances are open to the public and will be held from 7-9 p.m. every Thursday July 12 through Aug. 2. A special concert to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College will be held Thursday, Aug. 30. All concerts will be held rain or shine under the dome of the spectacular amphitheater.
“This is a festive community activity that has had great success in the past 13 summers,” said Tom Urbanski, director of public information at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. “It is popular among families and individuals, many who keep coming back every summer to hear great music in a wonderful setting. Just like previous years, each week’s concert will offer something different, and the audience can expect high quality, professional performances every week.
“So many people tell us that they look forward to the concerts each summer, and they prove it by showing up each week,” added Urbanski. “We hope to continue attracting new audience members each summer who have never had the experience of attending a concert performance at the college.”
In addition to the Thursday evening concerts, the college will host three Monday evening concerts by the Cloquet Community Band. These hour-long concerts are also free and begin at 7 p.m. each week on July 16, 23, and 30. On July 23, a young group of talented music students called All About Music will share the concert time in a special presentation.
Each entertaining evening of music is designed for family fun and for people of all ages. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets or seat cushions. Beginning at approximately 6:15 p.m. each Thursday concert evening, the Chefs’ Marketplace Outdoor Grill Barbeque Wagon will sell award-winning food specialties.
Scheduled to appear during the Hot Summer Nights Concert Series 2012 are:
Thursday, July 12: Tom Cawcutt
The opening night of the 2012 Hot Summer Nights Concerts Series features Tom Cawcutt, a well-known local performer who skillfully plays the piano and hooks you with the smooth sounds of his voice. Don’t miss Tom’s special concert of your favorite songs from across a range of musical genres. There will certainly be something for everyone.
Thursday, July 19: Caleb Hawley
Caleb Hawley is a New York City and automobile-based singer-songwriter who is creating quite a buzz across pop, jazz and modern folk circles with his latest recording. It also doesn’t hurt that he made it to the Hollywood finals of American Idol 2011. Hawley is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, and his success is undeniable with top awards like the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and the New York Songwriter’s Circle contest. Hawley has had the opportunity to open for artists such as The Dave Mathews Band, and he is often compared to Stevie Wonder and James Taylor. He’s a charming, soft-spoken guitar virtuoso with a great big voice that can sing just about anything, and he will keep you equally entertained and inspired.
Thursday, July 26: Claudia Schmidt
A musician who has always hated categories, Schmidt describes herself as a “creative noisemaker.” She has delighted many audiences, and you can expect anything at a Schmidt concert – hymn, poem, bawdy verse, torch song, satire, and the gamut of emotions. Her joy and love of performing are contagious. She can weave the elements of music and stage into a program so unified and full of life that you never know what's going to happen next, but chances are it's going to be wonderful.
Thursday, August 2: Rock-a-Billy Revue
This band of veteran musicians is known throughout the area as being the best at providing popular hit music, crazy antics, and crowd-pleasing fun. Rock-a-Billy Revue is the only group to play all 14 years since the college started the summer concert series, always drawing a big crowd.
Thursday, August 30: Six Appeal
Is Six Appeal a comedy group, a vocal ensemble, or a rock band? Audiences have been trying to answer that question for years. With no instruments, Six Appeal uses a cappella singing to span decades of classic oldies, current chart toppers, and catchy original tunes. Despite their cheeky group name, the antics of these six young gentlemen provide a good-natured atmosphere for their electrifying performance. Six Appeal will make you laugh, feed your musical sweet tooth, and leave you wondering how in the world they pulled it off just with voices. Six Appeal just won the championship title in the 2012 National Harmony Sweepstakes Competition. The public is invited to this special concert to help celebrate 25 years of Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College!
Mondays, July 16, July 13, July 30: Cloquet Community Band
Area residents play classic Sousa marches, Broadway show tunes, and familiar concert band music, featuring a different song list every week!
Monday, July 23: All About Music
All about Music is a talented vocal group consisting of young people, ages 13 to 21, singing Broadway, pop, and patriotic songs, with keyboard and guitar accompaniment. They have performed at the Tall Ships Festival, Bayfront Festival Park, and many others events and venues. These young performers are private music students at the Duluth-based studio Dana Caroll’s, Inc.
