To the Editor:
I felt compelled to write and tell of my experience at the Fourth of July parade.
I am pretty much home-bound and in a wheelchair due to severe complications of a septic knee that had to be totally removed. Getting anywhere without a knee and a handicap house or van is a challenge.
My family brought me to the Cloquet parade and they were able to sit by me in nice chairs provided by Rob and Lori Nelson [Nelson Funeral Care], who greeted us so generously. As the troops passed displaying our flag, my whole family stood in attention with respect. I did as well supporting myself with my other leg and my husband’s shoulder. As we were leaving, my husband (a Vietnam vet) started pushing me in my wheelchair and a lady beside me commented, “Why is she in a wheelchair when she could stand like that?” Let me tell you! Even if I had no legs I would still try to stand for our flag! It is people like that who bring shame to our country! I refused to let that bring me down and burst my balloon on this great day. Just the sight of all those people, most of whom were proudly [wearing] red, white and blue, lining the streets to celebrate the gift of freedom was a great sight. This is a time where we must all stand together strong.
