REGULAR MEETING

MONDAY - APRIL 16, 2012

The Wrenshall Board of Education's regular meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, April 16, 2012 by Chair Powers.

Board members in attendance were Troy Powers, Renae House, Matt Laveau, Janaki Fisher-Merritt and Deb Bryce. Also in attendance were Superintendent Rick Herman, Principal Frank, Business Manager Connie Skarbakka and Board Secretary Candy Christensen along with staff, students and community members. Board member Shane Kuhlmey was absent.

Additions or corrections to the agenda: Move items #13, #14, #15, #17 and #22 to a special meeting to be held on Wednesday, May 2nd. Move Open Forum (item # 21) to item #8 and item #8 to #8A.

MOTION by Powers; seconded by Laveau to approve the Agenda. Motion carried.

Update of Activity Fund, Interest Earned and Revenue Report.

MOTION by Fisher-Merritt; seconded by Bryce to approve the consent agenda. Motion carried.

Open Forum:

-Numerous Community members and students spoke regarding their thoughts on the pending board approval terminations of three non-tenured teachers.

Superintendent Herman recognized the following:

-Congratulations to Chloe Swanson and Neil Porter for placing in the Speech tournament and wish them luck at State.

-All those that worked so hard to make the Father Daughter Ball a success.

Principal Frank recognized the following:

-Two of our staff members were in an automobile accident this morning but everyone is okay.

Superintendent's report:

-All the arrangements are made for the Sr. Class trip that will be May 6th - 11th.

-Introduced the new Business Manager, Connie Skarbakka to the Board Members and those in attendance.

-Due to the segregation of funds set by the State of Minnesota, our district stands to lose $10,000-$12,000 of funding.

Principal's report:

-We continued testing for reading today for grades 3-11.

-Math testing will begin next week.

-To-date, 25 observations have been completed.

-The most difficult thing to do is tell a staff member that their contract is not being renewed.

-Discussed Meet & Confer.

Community Education Director's report:

-By May 1st we will be able to determine if we can hold summer latchkey program.

-The Father Daughter Ball was held Saturday and went great.

Community Theatre Improv Show for this Friday was canceled. We are -currently planning a dessert theatre for May. We are looking for more adults to participate.

-The current CE classes are Gun safety and AARP.

-Power Lunch came to a close last Tuesday. We had a little party with the first graders who gifts for their reading partners that they made themselves.

-The Youth Advisory Council helped with Fireman's BINGO and the Father Daughter Ball.

-Next on our agenda is an elementary fun day and highway clean-up in May.

-CE Advisory Meeting this Friday will be held in the Library at 5:00 pm.

Wrenshall Rummage Sales will be held on June 16th

-The pool will be closing on April 30th until swimming lessons in June.

MOTION by Powers; seconded by Bryce to approve Kim Demenge's leave of absence request. Motion carried.

MOTION by Powers ; seconded by Laveau to approve hiring a second 1st grade teacher. Motion carried.

Discussion regarding the preliminary budget for 2012/2013.

Discussion regarding a Referendum Brochure.

Discussion regarding our technology in the school, including wireless possibilities, use of Cypress funds and getting a trial use of the Now Board.

Open forum:

-All those in the audience, were given the opportunity to give their in-put regarding the proposed non-renewal of 3 teachers contracts.

-There will be a Special Meeting on May 2nd.

MOTION by Bryce; seconded by Fisher-Merritt to adjourn meeting at 6:55p.m. Motion carried.
