Carlton County residents are urged to get storm-related residential/non-commercial waste out of homes and sorted. There are currently multiple options for residents to dispose of waste.

In addition to some options being arranged by individual cities, the county is offering a variety of options for residents to take their residential/non-commercial waste.

Sorting garbage is crucial for public health and safety reasons. The county is urging residents to separate Household Hazardous Waste, appliances, electronics, demolition and solid waste (for example: ruined carpets and furniture), food waste, and woody waste. (Details of the types of waste are found on the attached flyer.) Collection points will require that this material be separated.

The Carlton County Transfer Station, the Shamrock Landfill and the Materials Recovery Center of the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District are all accepting storm-related waste. At noon on Tuesday, June 26, two additional sites in Cromwell and Barnum will also start accepting storm-related waste.

The county is setting up two additional waste drop-off sites that will open on Tuesday, June 26 at 12 noon:

Barnum County Shop – 3888 Highway 61, Barnum, open Tuesday until 6:00 p.m. and Wednesday-Saturday 8:30-6 p.m.

Cromwell County Shop – 1400 Highway 73, Cromwell, open Tuesday until 6:00 p.m. and Wednesday-Saturday 8:30-6:00 p.m.

The Carlton County Transfer Station is currently open regular hours and is accepting waste at its normal rates. The Transfer Station is located at 1950 Highway 210, ¾ miles west of Interstate 35. Their hours of operations are 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday – Saturday. The Transfer Station phone number is (218) 879-9089.

The Shamrock Landfill in Cloquet is accepting storm-related waste at a special rate for Carlton County residents. The landfill will accept all construction, demolition and related waste (items such as storm-damaged carpet, mattresses, furniture, clothing, and tree waste) for a special rate of $6.50 per cubic yard. County residents need to provide a drivers license or ID to get the special rate.

Residents are responsible for taking their waste to the landfills themselves.

Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has granted Shamrock a special approval to accept these storm-related residential/non-commercial wastes for approximately two weeks. Therefore, this special rate and arrangement is available until Friday, July 6. The facility will be open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Payments will be accepted from residents only with cash or check (no credit cards).

Shamrock Landfill is at 761 Minnesota Highway 45 in Cloquet. It can be accessed through its Highway 45 entrance, just south of the Park & Ride. The landfill’s phone number is (218) 878-0112.

The Materials Recovery Center of the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District in Duluth is also taking storm-related waste for all area residents for free through Friday, June 29.

WLSSD expanded hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 10 am-5pm, or Friday from 8am-4 pm. The center is on Rice Lake Road in Duluth just north of Airport Road.

Once damaged debris has been removed from homes, residents are encouraged to take care to properly clean any items or areas that were exposed to flood waters. There is potential to exposure to disease causing organisms from both storm water and sewage backups. Please reference dps.mn.gov or health.state.mn.us for guidance on proper cleaning and sanitizing.
