Lumberjacks beat Mound-Westonka in state quarterfinals

The Cloquet softball team won 4-3 on a three-run walkoff home run against Mount-Westonka this afternoon at the Minnesota State softball tournament.

A three-hour rain delay didn't dampen the spirits of the Lumberjacks softball players today. Returning to the state tournament for the first time since their school’s debut in 2002, Cloquet faced Mound-Westonka in a Class AA quarterfinal at Caswell Park in North Mankato.

And they won.

A Kayla Masessa three-run walkoff home run gave the Lumberjacks the victory. A phone call from Lumberjacks assistant coach and Pine Journal sports writer Tyler Korby after the win was barely audible over the screams of jubilant softball players in the background.

Cloquet will play again tonight, either at 9 or 10 p.m. Tune into WKLK FM 96 to listen to the game.

En route to their program’s first state berth in 10 years, Cloquet no-hit Moose Lake-Willow River, dethroned previous 10-time section champion Hermantown, outslugged Proctor and defeated Hibbing twice, including a 9-0 shutout over the Bluejackets last Thursday at Braun Park for the title.

Cloquet will meet the winner of the Hawley vs St. Anthony Village Thursday night, while Friday will conclude all state championship play.
