Catlin Kersting of Cloquet was recently recognized during the Annual Awards Program at the University of Minnesota-Crookston. Kersting received the Hort Club Award and Exceptional Service to the Hort Club Award, as well as the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Kersting is a sophomore majoring in horticulture.

Jolynne Denman of Esko was awarded first semester textbooks at the Waldorf College Scholarship Day on April 21. Denman, a senior at Cloquet High School, will major in English and creative writing at Waldorf College, a four-year, liberal arts college in Forest City, Iowa.

“Jolynne’s exceptional academic record and involvement in extracurricular activities impressed the selection committee,” said Scott Pitcher, director of admissions at Waldorf College. “I’m confident that she will be an asset to our college.”

Kelly Sue Kostecki of Cloquet graduated from South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering.

Alex Aili of Esko was named to the dean’s list at Oak Hills Christian College in Bemidji, Minn., for the spring 2012 semester. Students earning this honor have a semester grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

Brandi Lundquist of Wrenshall graduated from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Mich. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering.

The following students were named to the dean’s list at North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D., for the spring 2012 semester: Emily Johnson of Cloquet, majoring in exercise science; Mathew Kayser of Cloquet, majoring in pharmaceutical sciences; Makenzie Korby of Cloquet, majoring in accouting; Kathryn Schulz of Cloquet, majoring in interior design; Katlyn Nap of Esko, majoring in emergency management; Tanya Siltanen of Kettle River, majoring in nursing; and Matthew Indihar of Sturgeon Lake, majoring in civil engineering.

Kaycee Knutson, daughter of Kari and Steven Knutson of Esko, participated in the commencement ceremony at the College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn., on May 12. Knutson received a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education.

Collin Voge of Cloquet has been awarded an OtterTail Power Scholarship from Wadena Area College Foundation (WACF) for the 2012 fall semester at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Wadena and Baudette. Voge is pursuing a degree in electrical lineworker technology. The scholarship dollars are designated for use towards tuition and books.

Amanda Ann Rosemore, a senior majoring in economics at the University of Rochester, has been elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest academic honorary society. Rosemore, the daughter of Nora and Steven Rosemore, is a resident of Cloquet and a graduate of Cloquet Senior High School. Membership in Phi Beta Kappa recognizes students for their outstanding scholarly achievements, humanistic values and personal character. Students are selected by faculty who are themselves members of the society.

Kelsey Saralampi, a junior at Bemidji State University, has been named to the 2012 Spring Academic All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference softball team. To be eligible for the Academic All-NSIC team, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.20 or better, be a member of a varsity traveling team and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing with one full year completed at that campus. Saralampi is a graduate of Lincoln High School in Esko.

Jonathan M. Vopat of Wrenshall was named to the dean’s list for the 2012 winter semester at Northern Michigan University. Vopat qualified for this honor by achieving a grade point average of 3.25 or higher.

Laura Castle of Carlton and Laura Mills of Esko participated in commencement exercises Sunday, May 6, at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. Castle, daughter of Lewis Castle and Virginia Korte-Castle, is a graduate of Cloquet Senior High School. She doubled majored in communication-organizational and religion at Concordia. Mills, daughter of Michael and Kathy Mills, is a graduate of Lincoln High School in Esko. She double majored in religion and environmental studies and minored in psychology at Concordia.
