Shirley Jeanne McCarthy (Flinn) of Crosslake, Minn., passed peacefully on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at age 83. Shirley, known as "Flip" at Faribault High, worked as a dental assistant and volunteered at a local hospital. She married Frank McCarthy in 1948. They traveled the country visiting all the states except Alaska. Although they resided in Sleepy Eye, Minnetonka, Cloquet, Virginia and Duluth, the "Lake" was always home. They shared a love of golf, tennis, bowling and Scotch. Yes, Scotch, blendedmalt.
Shirley liked to have fun and her passion was playing cards. Most who knew her shared a hand of blackjack, bridge, euchre, gin, 500, cribbage or poker and more than likely lost a little cash to her coffer. She accumulated numerous masterpoints in bridge. Mom always liked to say: "I did my damnedest." You did Mom, and you did it well!
We love and miss you.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, who passed in 1988; her parents, Glenn and Clara (Overby) Flinn of Faribault, Minn.; sister, Marion Roberts Faribault; and brother Gordon Flinn of Austin, Texas.
She is survived by her children, John (Linda) of Louden, Tenn., Pat (Sue) of Plymouth, Minn., Kelly (Barb) of Tempe, Ariz., and Mike (Nikki) of Crosslake; grandchildren, Michael, Capt. USAF, of Ft. Walton, Fla., and Kasey of Plymouth, Minn.
A memorial gathering will be held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, June 16, at Brenny Funeral Home in Crosslake. A private family graveside ceremony will follow the memorial. Contact North Country Floral at 218-825-0522.
