REGULAR MEETING

MONDAY - MARCH 26, 2012

The Wrenshall Board of Education's regular meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. on Monday, March 26, 2012 by Chair Powers.

Board members in attendance were Troy Powers, Renae House, Matt Laveau, Janaki Fisher-Merritt and Deb Bryce. Also in attendance were Superintendent Rick Herman, Principal Frank and Board Secretary Candy Christensen along with staff and community members. Board member Shane Kuhlmey was absent.

Additions or corrections to the agenda: Strike item #14 and add item #15.

MOTION by Laveau; seconded by Bryce to approve the Agenda. Motion carried.

Update of Activity Fund, Interest Earned and Revenue Report.

MOTION by Fisher-Merritt; seconded by Bryce to approve the consent agenda. Motion carried.

Superintendent Herman recognized the following:

-Deb Bryce for her continued involvement in attempting to coordinate a volunteer program in the district.

Principal Frank recognized the following:

-Denise North and her Knowledge Bowl Teams for placing 6th out of 11 teams in the Regional Competition.

-Jeremy Zywicki and the students for raising $3,717.25 for Jump Rope for Heart.

-Kelly Thymian, Sue Tracy and Liz Baker along with students for raising $1,633.28 for Pennies for Patients.

Superintendent's report:

-The new Business Manager will start on Monday, April 2nd.

-Been busy working on gathering historical information for a Referendum in November.

-Golf started today. There are 10 boys and 6 girls participating.

-Discussed the article on pink slime used in ground beef.

-We are changing our background check policy to expand all searches to include nationwide data.

-There are 6 seniors going on the class trip.

Principal's report:

-We have conducted 2 of the 3 interviews for the Kindergarten long-term position.

-Math testing is underway for the 3rd - 8th graders. Reading testing will be conducted April 16th - 17th and Science testing will be later.

- There are 2 seniors that still need to meet grad testing standards.

-Have implemented additional supervision during lunch period to make sure students stay in the building.

-Denise North would like to see a Jr. High Knowledge Bowl team for next year. They have a fall season.

Community Education Director's report:

-By Friday we plan to have everything organized for summer latchkey so that we can start sending out registration forms to all elementary students. We will be asking for those forms to be returned by May 1st so that we will be able to coordinate staffing and figure out if we have enough kids to financially support the program. We will also have a latchkey booth at K-roundup this Friday.

-We have 308 people registered for the Father/Daughter Ball.

-The Community Ed Trap class was a hit! Gun safety and AARP are starting in April.

-Community Theatre is going great! We are holding an Improv night in the gym on April 20th as a fundraiser. We hope to have a play before the end of the school year.

-Youth Advisory Council sold concessions at conferences and will also be selling concessions and helping out with Fireman's BINGO this Saturday.

MOTION by Powers; seconded by Laveau to approve, with regret, the retirement of Deb Rubesh and extend their sincere Thank You for her many years of service. Motion carried.

MOTION by Fisher-Merritt ; seconded by House to approve the snow day be made up by staff only on May 31st. Motion carried.

MOTION by Bryce; seconded by Powers to approve the renewal of Liability Insurance with Woodland Insurance. Motion carried.

Discussion regarding Referendum.

Discussion regarding the ideas for possible future changes in our technology hardware and policy.

Open forum:

-Discussion regarding the value of the Advisorship 8th period.

-Discussion regarding salary for Junior High coaches.

MOTION by Bryce; seconded by Fisher-Merritt to adjourn meeting at 6:45p.m. Motion carried.
