MONDAY - FEB. 27, 2012
Knowledge Bowl competition between board members and two Knowledge Bowl teams commenced at 6:00 p.m. All teams did very well.
The Wrenshall Board of Education's regular meeting was called to order at 6:34 p.m. on Monday, February 27, 2012 by Chair Powers.
Board members in attendance were Troy Powers, Renae House, Matt Laveau, Janaki Fisher-Merritt and Deb Bryce. Also in attendance were Superintendent Rick Herman, Principal Frank and Board Secretary Candy Christensen along with staff and community members. Board member Shane Kuhlmey was absent.
Additions or corrections to the agenda: Add item #19.
Board member Matt Laveau requested Item 8-b be moved to Item 7-b.
MOTION by Fisher-Merritt; seconded by Bryce to approve the Agenda with change. Motion carried.
Update of Activity Fund, Interest Earned and Revenue Report.
MOTION by Fisher-Merritt; seconded by Powers to approve the expenditures. Motion carried.
MOTION by Fisher-Merritt; seconded by Laveau to approve the consent agenda with name correction made to January 23, 2012 minutes. Motion carried.
Superintendent Herman recognized the following:
-Hugh Line donated $500.00 for a scholarship.
Principal Frank recognized the following:
-Congratulations to TJ Gamradt for placing 1st in the District Spelling Bee and 16th in the Regional Spelling Bee.
-Met with the Brickyard Days Committee.
-The Silent Auction for the Golf team was a huge success. The amount raised was nearly $1,600.00.
-In the process of compiling a list of duties for the new business manager.
-Registration for next year's classes has gone smoothly.
-Homecoming Week events went well. The Homecoming King is Tony Wojtysiak and the Queen is Maria Burcar.
-The high school students, along with staff, attended a showing of Star Wars. There were 145 students and 20 adults.
-Parent/Teacher conferences will be held this coming Thursday and next Tuesday.
-Both basketball teams are wrapping up their seasons.
Community Education Director's report:
-Northland Volleyball Club will be renting gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays (Mar 6-May 17).
-Swimming lessons coming to a close on March 10th. There will be a 2-week summer session in June. There are 4 pool rentals in March.
RSVPs for Father/Daughter Ball are starting to come in. The next meeting is this Friday.
-Tony Sheda will be teaching a class in trapping. Gun safety training will be coming soon.
-There will be the 1st Community Theatre meeting in March. Staff member Adam Helbach will be assisting.
-Youth Advisory Council will be selling dinner at parent/teacher conferences.
-CE Advisory Board will meet this Friday
MOTION by Powers; seconded by Laveau to approve the 2012/2013 calendar as presented with the understanding to continue exploring the modified 4-day calendar during the winter months. Motion carried.
MOTION by Bryce ; seconded by Powers to approve the 2-year contract for Connie Skarbakka as Business Manager. Motion carried.
MOTION by Bryce ; seconded by House to approve hiring Dustin McLeod as custodian. Motion carried.
MOTION by Fisher-Merritt ; seconded by Laveau to approve NLSEC By-Laws and Agreement as presented. Motion carried.
MOTION by Laveau ; seconded by Bryce to approve the starting of a Girl's Golf Team. Motion carried.
MOTION by Powers ; seconded by Fisher-Merritt to approve Ellie Hall as the Assistant Golf Coach. Motion carried.
MOTION by Fisher-Merritt ; seconded by Bryce to approve hiring a Special Education Paraprofessional. Motion carried.
Discussion regarding the Community/School Sub-committee's next step being how to execute and funding options.
Discussion regarding the wrestling event planned for Brickyard Days.
-Denise North thanked the board members for their participation in the Knowledge Bowl challenge with the students. And Thank You to the Booster Club for their support.
-Next year the plan is to have Jr. High level Knowledge Bowl teams.
-Sue Tracy discussed her plans to plant flowers around the gazebo in the spring with her horticulture class.
-Allison Jerde asked about her replacement while on maternity leave.
