Joan W. Coyer

Joan W. Coyer, 76, of Grand Rapids, Minn., died Monday, April 30, 2012. She was born on Labor Day, Sept. 2, 1935, to Grace and Elmer Wickstrom in Pine City, Minn. Her growing up years were spent in Cloquet. She graduated from Cloquet High School in 1953 and worked at Diamond Match as a secretary where she met her future husband, Martin, who worked as a forester.

Joan W. Coyer, 76, of Grand Rapids, Minn., died Monday, April 30, 2012. She was born on Labor Day, Sept. 2, 1935, to Grace and Elmer Wickstrom in Pine City, Minn. Her growing up years were spent in Cloquet. She graduated from Cloquet High School in 1953 and worked at Diamond Match as a secretary where she met her future husband, Martin, who worked as a forester.

Joan and Martin were married Sept. 10, 1955, in Cloquet where they lived for two months before moving to Grand Rapids, Mancos, Colo., Cloquet, Bemidji, and then back to Grand Rapids in 1987. Joan was the proud mother of five daughters and eight grandchildren. Through the years she volunteered for the Girl Scouts and had many volunteer jobs in the communities and churches where she lived, including Zion Lutheran Church, the Food Shelf, and Habitat for Humanity in Grand Rapids. She loved being a grandma and doing craft projects.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Jean Ekholm; and daughter Lynne Panci.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Martin; children and grandchildren, Joe Panci and Hannah of Eagle River Wis., Gayle Coyer of Two Harbors Minn., Cheryl (Mark) Couch and Esther and Rebecca of Palmer, Alaska, Jill (Bill) DeVita and Louis and Abigail of Stevens Point, Wis., and Christy (Darren) Scovel and Jake, Josh and Michael of Seattle, Wash.; and siblings, Darrel (Dolly) Wickstrom of Barnum, Minn., Beverly Niesen of Aitkin, Minn., Dale (Diane) Wickstrom of Saginaw, Minn., and Jane Hugdahl of Minneapolis, Minn.

Visitation with the family will be Thursday, May 17, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids. The Rev. Paul Leslie will officiate.

Joan requested no flowers, but only memorials to Zion Lutheran Church, Habitat for Humanity, Grand Rapids Food Shelf, or the giver's choice.
