Carlton County offers reduced-cost compost bins

Carlton County has been selected by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for a grant to sell compost bins to its residents.

Carlton County has been selected by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for a grant to sell compost bins to its residents. The compost bins (Earth Machine) retail for $100 but will be sold to Carlton County residents for $50. The grant allows the county to purchase 50 bins. A compost turner is also included in the purchase price.

The compost bins will be sold at the Carlton County Planning and Zoning office located at 301 Walnut Ave., Room 103, in Carlton. The sale starts at 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 1. They are available on a first come, first served basis. They are not able to reserve bins and when they are gone, they are gone.

“By composting and recycling, you can reduce the amount of garbage you generate by up to 80 percent. It quickly becomes routine and makes a big difference,” said Heather Cunningham, Carlton County’s resource and recycling coordinator.

Area residents with questions about the compost bin offer should call Cunningham at 218-384-9178.
