The Arrowhead Library System (ALS) and Cloquet Public Library invite you to a slide presentation by Duluth novelist Jack Salmela on his novel “Of Vikings and Voyageurs” (North Star Press of St. Cloud), accompanied by a historical interpreter portraying a French voyageur. The event takes place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, at the Cloquet Public Library.

Salmela will take the audience on an enlightening tour of early Minnesota history based on research he compiled while writing his novel, a mystery thriller that precedes his 2012 mystery, “Sisterhood of the Hennepin Chalice.” Using original maps, authentic voyageur artifacts and a voyageur re-enactor, this presentation will appeal to anyone with an interest in local history, Scandinavian heritage and historical mysteries.

“Of Vikings and Voyageurs” has been described as a mixture of The Da Vinci Code and National Treasure in a Minnesota Northwoods setting. The novel’s protagonist, Tim Malone, is a University of Minnesota graduate student who is also the main character in “Sisterhood of the Hennepin Chalice.” Did early Viking explorers make it as far inland as Minnesota? Salmela conducted extensive research for both books and his answers are sure to intrigue.

This informative, speculative and interactive program is geared towards adults and older children. Admission is free, thanks to sponsorship by the Arrowhead Library System and funding from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Although the library is normally closed on Wednesday evenings, the large meeting room will be open for the event. Seating will be available after 6 p.m. Questions regarding the event may be directed to Mark King, adult services librarian, at 879-1531.
