Coaching clinic to be held Sunday

In order to develop youth coaches in the Carlton County area, a coaching clinic, “Coaching the Heart of the Player,” will be held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, March 25, at Cloquet Gospel Tabernacle, located at 14th Street and Washington Avenue in Cloquet. The clinic has been developed as a workshop for men and women coaches (for all ages and sports) who are interested in learning coaching skills that are understandable and valuable for application in the rewarding area of coaching young people.

Come early for a Clinic Kick-off Pancake Supper at 5 p.m. for those interested. The pancake supper and clinic is sponsored by the Sharpening Iron Men’s Group of the Gospel Tab. If you get a chance, email sharpeningiron@gmail.com if you plan to be at the pancake supper.

The featured speaker for this clinic is Cal Barr, an excellent speaker, motivator and coach. If you are interested in improving your coaching game, come prepared to be challenged! He will focus on “Developing Whole People in a Broken World” and “Cultivating a Heart of Excellence by Teaching Character Through Sport.”

Since 1962 Barr has been involved in sport (as a player, coach, official, administrator, sport minister, and as a parent). He played football, hockey and baseball in the youth leagues of Duluth and at Duluth East High School. He played for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball organization from 1974-76. After that he played middle linebacker for the University of Minnesota-Duluth and signed with the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons. Since his playing days he has logged over 46 seasons of coaching experience at the youth, high school and university level in football, baseball, rugby and soccer.

Currently, Barr is the head baseball coach at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Cloquet, and he is the Director of Coaches Ministry and area director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Northeastern Minnesota.
