Facebook rumor about Barnum coaches not entirely true

Barnum High School’s coaches and activities directors may have to re-apply for their positions soon, but there’s no truth to a rumor that alumni need not apply.
At the Barnum School Board’s Feb. 21 meeting, school board member Don Juntunen introduced a motion onto the agenda to have the coaches and directors re-apply for their positions.
That motion was tabled, but Superintendent David Bottem said that add-on motion grew into a larger rumor thanks to social networking.
“A staff member told me on Wednesday that they had heard on Facebook that alumni would be excluded from applying,” Bottem said. “That is not true.”
It’s untrue if for no other reason than no motion was passed in the first place. Bottem did say that the motion regarding the coaches and directors in general would have to go through the district’s Policy Committee before any action would be contemplated.
“We have a policy in place that might affect [the motion],” Bottem said. “If board members want that change, they should go to the policy committee.”
Bottem added that the alumni rumor never came up at the school board meeting.
“It was an agenda add-on,” Bottem said of the coaches’ resolution. “We now have a chance to think about it and talk about it, and say ‘Where is this really going?’”
And former Bombers will have the ability to take part in that discussion. The next school board meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, in the board room at Barnum High School.
