REMINDER: Gypsy moth open houses set for this week
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and partner organizations are looking to tackle gypsy moth infestations in northeastern Minnesota this summer. In anticipation of the treatments, the department is inviting people to learn about the effort at open houses this week in Carlton County.
OPEN HOUSE SCHEDULE
February 28 Jay Cooke State Park River Inn Visitor Center, 780 Hwy 210, Carlton 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
February 28 Fond du Lac Cloquet Community Center, 1720 Big Lake Rd., Cloquet 4 p.m.-6 p.m.
February 29 Cloquet City Council Chambers, 1307 Cloquet Ave., Cloquet 5 p.m.-7 p.m.
MDA maintains a monitoring program to watch for start-up infestations, and when an infestation is found, the department conducts suppression treatments to slow their spread. In 2011, MDA found infestations covering 145,078 acres in St. Louis and Carlton counties. The department is now developing treatment plans for the affected areas, including sites near Cloquet, Carlton, Jay Cooke State Park, Fond du Lac Reservation, Boulder Lake and Fairbanks.
