Marketplace Foods in Moose Lake experienced the theft of some $2,300 in cash and vouchers last weekend during the height of the afternoon business hours.

According to Moose Lake Police Chief Bryce Bogenholm, police responded to a call around 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, reporting discovery of the theft. Staff at the store indicated the door to the store office apparently failed to close properly and someone entered the office and stole the money bag from the safe.

Bogenholm said the cash was mostly in the form of $5 and $10 bills. The theft is thought to have occurred sometime between 2:30 p.m. and 3:25 p.m. that afternoon.

He indicated that while no one is currently in custody in connection with the theft, the department is investigating reports of two suspicious people who were seen loitering near the store’s video rental machine, which is in close proximity to the office. He said the department has contacted the video rental company to find out who may have rented movies during that time frame.

Bogenholm added that Marketplace does have video security cameras in various parts of the store and those tapes will be reviewed as well.

Anyone with any information that might lead to the apprehension of the person or persons who committed the theft is asked to contact the Moose Lake Police Department at 218-485-8404.
