Elementary students shine ‘Lights of Love’

The Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary sponsored an essay contest this year in conjunction with the hospital’s annual “Lights of Love” Ceremony and fundraiser. Area fourth-graders were invited to write an essay entitled “The Person Who Made A Difference In My Life.”

Winners of the contest were honored at the “Lights of Love” ceremony when the essays were read. Ribbons and small prizes were awarded.

“Lights of Love” provides an opportunity for the community to honor or remember special people who have impacted their lives by buying a light on the Community Memorial Hospital Christmas tree. The names of these important people are then listed in the Northland Smart Shopper. Proceeds for the fundraiser go to benefit the building fund at the hospital.

Following are the winning entries.

FIRST PLACE:

Hannah Erickson

Churchill Elementary

Mrs. Cameron’s class

Wendy Wotejeack is my stepmom. It was the end of kindergarten, June 2, 2008, when I met her the first time. Every day she came to my house. Then I went to Ohio. When I came back, we were living at her house. My first taekwondo tournament she gave me good luck even though she wasn’t there. Then I won my first trophy! She gave light to my life, she took me out of the darkness. She came into my life ready for a journey and we’re going to continue it together.

FIRST PLACE:

Natasha Ammesmaki

Churchill Elementary

Mrs. Cameron’s class

My hero is Dawn Ammesmaki. The reason I picked Dawn is because she is a supportive mom and she tells me I can do anything. I look up to her. I can do it. Dawn is my hero because she saved me from going to my 14th foster home and that’s why she is my hero. She is a good cook. I love her cooking. I like to go to the zoo and Valley Fair with Dawn. It is fun. I love Dawn as much as she loves me. Dawn is cool.

SECOND PLACE:

Ava Bujold Grondahl

Queen of Peace School

Ms. Jager’s class

The person who made a difference in my life is my principal. Her name is Sister Therese. She has shown me the difference from right and wrong. She has tried to show our school is no ordinary school. We are family. No matter how far we are away from each other we are family. Our school has been a school for one hundred years. Sister Therese was a huge part of that. She teaches me, my friends and even my teacher! I really hope God is happy of what Sister Therese has done for us and God bless Sister Therese!

SECOND PLACE:

Emily Matzdorf

Churchill Elementary

Ms. Unertl’s class

My great-grandpa is great because I have known him my whole life. I remember he made me happy to think that he lived so long. He died this summer when I was 9 years old. I went to his funeral and saw him before he got buried in the ground. He changed my life. He was always wearing a smile. He taught me that if you can’t hear, see or walk, you can still love; that’s what counts.

THIRD PLACE:

Jessica Teitelbaum

Churchill Elementary

Ms. Gagne’s class

I chose Alexis because she works me through problems and hard times and plus is now my step-cousin. She is also my friend because she is helpful and funny. Alexis has changed my life by being there for me and not fighting with me. I have learned to be careful about what to say and do, also do not tell secrets and do not do bad actions.

THIRD PLACE:

Carter Larson

Churchill Elementary

Mrs. Cameron’s class

The person who changed my life is my grandpa Raymond because he taught me how to mow the lawn, drive the tractor, plow snow, and drive the boat. My grandpa always shows me new things like a 22-magnum for grouse hunting. He also told me not to pull the brakes on the tractor at high speeds and never to run over a rock with the lawnmower. He changed my life by teaching me the exciting life of the farm. He is like a gifted angel spreading magic to me. My grandpa Raymond is the most wonderful grandpa that I ever had.
