Slick roads and a dusting of snow were likely to blame for a fatal accident on Interstate 35 near Cloquet Thursday morning.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Stephanie Tassone, 19, of Cloquet, was driving a Ford Escort southbound on the freeway at approximately 6:55 a.m. Thursday when her vehicle spun out and then slid into and through the median separating the northbound and southbound traffic. Her car then slid in front of northbound traffic near mile marker 241 and was struck broadside in the driver’s side door by an Oldsmobile Aurora.
Tassone, a 2010 graduate of Esko High School, died at the scene from her injuries. The occupants of the northbound car, driver Troy Miller, 24, and passenger Justine Miller, 26 were taken to Community Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released.
The Minnesota State Patrol incident report stated that road conditions were icy at the time of the accident.
Emergency crews including the Esko Volunteer Fire Department and the Cloquet Area Fire District as well as Minnesota State Patrol and Carlton County Sheriff’s Department responded to the accident, which occurred in the northbound lanes near the Korby Road underpass in Carlton County, or mile marker 241. One lane of northbound traffic was closed for two or three hours while officials worked to document and clear the accident scene.
