Citizens may comment on a revised solid waste permit for the Shamrock Environmental Landfill in Cloquet until Dec. 30.

According to Julie Henderson of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the MPCA received a request from Dem-Con Companies approximately six months ago to be removed from the solid waste facility permit as the industrial landfill operator. Rather than have two separate comment periods, the agency chose to wait until an agreement was finalized with the new operator, Shamrock Landfill.

The public notice states that the operator change is the only modification necessary for the permit, identified by the MPCA as Permit SW-399. Citizens may submit comments, request that the MPCA commissioner place the matter on the board meeting agenda or request a contested case hearing before an administrative law judge within the comment period established by the notice (from Nov. 30 to Dec. 30, 2011). The public notice number is SW-2218. Citizens may submit comments or requests to Julie Henderson, P.E., Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Industrial Division, 520 Lafayette Road North, St. Paul, MN 55155-4194, phone 651-757-2423 or e-mail: julie.henderson@state.mn.us.

Shamrock Environmental Landfill opened for business Nov. 28. The industrial landfill is authorized to dispose of non-hazardous industrial and construction/demolition debris.
