Crews rescue dog from partially frozen lake in Carlton County

Emergency crews rescued a dog from a partially frozen Carlton County lake on Thursday, prompting a warning from officials about ice safety.

According to the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office, a caller reported to authorities at about 4:15 p.m. Thursday that her dog — a three-year-old, approximately 100-pound German shepherd-golden retriever mix — had broken through ice about 150 feet from shore on Little Hanging Horn Lake, south of Barnum.

The sheriff’s office and the Barnum Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene. They attached rescue ropes to a 12-foot boat, and a responder wearing ice and water safety gear rode in the boat out to the dog. Once the dog was in the boat, the vessel was towed back to shore. The dog was turned over to its owner and appeared to be in good condition, the sheriff’s office said.

Officials warned Northland residents to be careful when venturing out on frozen lakes this winter; ice can be unpredictably thin, especially this early in the season. For general information on ice conditions, try checking with local bait shops and resorts.
