About two weeks ago on a Sunday about 5 p.m., Judy Tamminen’s cousin from Holland, Peter van Niejenhuis, came into the port of Duluth on his ship “The Flinterstream.” They were able to spot him out in the harbor and then watched the pilot bring him into the port. The Tamminens raced over to the port and watched as they docked. He’s the captain of his ship and the family owns a number of ships under the name of “Flinter.” He just arrived from Italy bringing cargo into Cleveland. After loading up with wheat in Duluth, he was to go back to Italy. Peter had us come into the ship and showed us everything, from the computerized, automatic control center down to the engine room. They last met Peter about 14 years ago in Holland and Bruce and Brett met him in 1972 when they were 13 and 6 years old. Anyway, there were 11 of us greeting him and Bruce went back on Monday morning to watch the loading of the grain. It was such an exciting experience to be able to see him in the port of Duluth. Peter’s family, wife and twin daughters reside in Delfzijl. Peter speaks three languages, maybe more, and is very fluent in English.
