The fans were on their feet.

Tuesday night’s swim audience at the Herb Drew Pool in Cloquet watched anxiously, as Grand Rapids topped Cloquet-Esko-Carlton 49-45 in a thrilling girls swimming dual that came down to the final race of the evening.

CEC fell short during the final 25 yards of the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the Thunderhawks – one of the top swim teams in the area – narrowly escaped with the slim four-point win over the much-improved Lumberjacks in their final home dual of the season.

CEC’s lone dual win this fall came at home over Duluth Denfeld on Sept. 29.

The Lumberjacks were competitive in a majority of the events, posting winners throughout. They’ll next head to the North-South Invitational in Two Harbors on Tuesday, Oct. 18. Action will begin at 5 p.m.
