A missing 81-year-old male Alzheimer’s patient was located at approximately 5:45 p.m. on Monday night after wandering away on foot from his residence on Bobiltoy Lane in Lakeview Township.

The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office received the report of the man’s disappearance at 2 p.m. that afternoon. He was later found by law enforcement officials on a trail not far from where he disappeared, on land adjoining his family cabin on Cole Lake.

According to Carlton County Lieutenant Rick Lake, the man was in good physical condition and survived his time in the woods in good shape, though he was wet from wandering through some swampy areas. He was checked by medical personnel at the scene.

Additional units responding to the search included the Carlton County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse, Wright Fire, St. Louis Search and Rescue and Canine Unit, Kettle River Fire, and Life Flight from Hibbing, which now does search and rescue work as well as medical flights.

Carlton County also notified the “A Child is Missing” alert program, which sent out automated phone messages to residents in the search area, giving them the man’s description and the time and location where he disappeared.

“The Carlton County Sheriff’s office would like to thank everyone who assisted us in finding him,” said Sheriff Kelly Lake. “If not for your help this could have ended much differently.”
