Last Wednesday, the Section 7AA boys and girls golf championships were held at Giants Ridge in Biwabik, Minn., and a number of local golfers gave it their best shot.
Although no local individuals or teams qualified for the upcoming state meet, the Northland was performed well on the Iron Range.
Cloquet’s Jack McFarlane and Moose Lake-Willow River’s Grant Douglas were the highest individual finishers on the boys end with a pair of two-day totals of 168, just four strokes away from state.
Other individual finishers included Esko-Carlton’s Marc Peterson at 175 and ML-WR’s Gabe Douglas at 186. A trio of Lumberjacks also signed their cards last week, including Eric Fryc at 179, Zach Strom at 181 and Evan Sheff with a 190.
Pacing the girls meet was ML-WR’s Samantha Schaumburg, who posted a local individual best of 198, five strokes from state.
Fellow local competitors included Esko-Carlton’s Sarah Juntunen at 213, Emily Gustafson at 220 and Cori Pelletier at 225. ML-WR also sported Kayla Larson with a 221 and Lindsay Loehlein a 226. Arica Sheff was the top Cloquet finisher at 215, while Laura Bakken withdrew from the tournament following her first day score of 112.
Hermantown won both the boys and girls team titles, handily.
Tuesday, the Wrenshall boys competed in the Section 7A meet, however, did not qualify the team or any individuals for state play.
